Rosario (2025) Blends Grief, Tradition, and Terror... But Does It Work?

Rosario made its world premiere at the Overlook Film Festival, where director Felipe Vargas introduced the film with heartfelt energy; and a reminder that sometimes, horror is deeply personal.

Synopsis (No Spoilers)

Rosario follows a successful young woman who returns to her family home after learning of her estranged grandmother's sudden passing. As she waits for emergency responders to arrive, strange occurrences begin to unfold; forcing her to confront something far more sinister.

What Worked

The storyline is beautiful, grounded in themes of family, grief, generational trauma, and sacrifice. The cinematography is stunning; eerie and in many ways, poetic.

One detail I loved? How moments from the main character’s life mirrored those of her elders. It’s subtle, and some may miss it, but it adds a whole new emotional layer to the story.

What Might Not Work (For Others)

While I personally enjoyed the story, some viewers felt it echoed elements from the Evil Dead series a bit too closely. This is a detail that one viewer mentioned during the Q&A portion of the screening, which Vargas appreciated.

Also worth noting: the film involves curses, witchcraft, and spiritual themes—so if that’s not your thing, this one may not resonate.

There are several humorous moments woven throughout the film, which may feel a little off-tone for some. And the ending? It adds yet another twist, which might divide the room.

The Vibe

If you’re not seeing this one in theaters, throw it on for a scary movie night with your family. Lights low, snacks ready, blankets close... and maybe someone to hug.

This is the kind of horror that creeps in gently… and then grabs you.

The Verdict: Watch

This might be a hit-or-miss for some, but for me? I really enjoyed it.

Rosario is creepy, twisted, and layered with meaning. And more than anything, it proves that Felipe Vargas is a voice to watch. I get the feeling this is just the beginning.

Rosario hits theaters May 2nd. Tickets will be available soon! 🎟️
