Hallow Road (2025): A Sleeper Hit or Just a Slow Ride?
Share
Hallow Road made its world premiere at Austin’s SXSW Film & TV Festival in March, and just a few weeks later screened at The Overlook Film Festival—where director Babak Anvari introduced the film and built the anticipation with an eerie, grounded setup.
Synopsis (No Spoilers)
Hallow Road follows two parents who receive a sudden emergency call from their daughter—she’s been in an accident. As they rush to her location, strange and sinister things begin to unfold, and the line between panic and paranoia starts to blur.

What Worked
Hallow Road will hit hard for anyone who’s ever gotten one of those “I need your help” calls. It’s grounded, relatable, and uses its simplicity to create tension.
The film leans heavily into anxiety over spectacle, putting you in the car with the parents as they try to reach their daughter—and it works. There are no visual jump scares, but the sound design alone makes your heart race and your stomach sink.
And the story? Twisted. Diabolical. In a good way.
What Might Not Work (For Others)
The setup feels similar to The Desperate Hour, which wasn’t a hit with some of my viewers. Like that film, Hallow Road is dialogue-driven, set mostly inside a car, and includes long pauses meant to let moments sink in—but that pacing might not be for everyone.
And personally? The dad was not driving fast enough for me. I was stressed.
The Vibe
This feels like one of those movies you stumble upon late at night while looking for something to blind watch—and you end up completely hooked. It gives hidden gem energy.
It’s a popcorn movie, but the kind you watch under a blanket with the lights down low.
The Verdict: Watch
While I wouldn’t necessarily watch this in theaters, don’t let that fool you—I still really liked Hallow Road. It’s a quiet, anxious little thriller that knows exactly how to mess with your nerves, especially if you’re a parent… or just the “responsible friend.”
Hallow Road is set to release in the United Kingdom and Ireland on May 16th. 🎟️
If you want to see it come to a theater near you, you have to make some noise and let the ones who can make it happen know.
